Who are in the pictures?
“The pictures are taken on my travels to various locations around the world. There is a picture of a young boy from the
township
of
Khayelitsha
in
Cape Town
, three young girls who live in the Rohincha farvela in
Rio de Janeiro
and a girl from the streets of
Bangalore
,
India
. And then there are some pictures of my nieces and nephews from a very wealthy European country. The idea however, is to show the communalities between them and underscore the quote: ‘Nothing stands in the way of millions of people calling for change’. “
How did you make the paintings?
“I work in an atelier that is located on the roof top in the building where I live. It is hot has Hades in the summer and freezing in the winter, but is serves the purpose well. I work on a hard composite wood material and thus not the traditional canvas. This material is much more affordable, but also more sensitive so I have to paint them while they lie in a horizontal position. They measure 48” by 48” inches (120 cm x 120 cm) so it’s quite a hassle to move them around. “
Is your work a political statement?
“No, at least it is not intended to be just that. For me the interesting part of the whole thing is about inspiring people to believe again and believe in something bigger than them self. I come from a cold little country in
Northern Europe
where we are not used to being summoned for a larger purpose by our politicians, to say the least, so the idea that we somehow can come together as a people is very compelling to me despite how idealistic that might sound.”
Can we expect to see more digital art projects like this in the future on ByJacobsen.com?
